The Sounds of Silence

My iPod battery died on the way home today.

It was a tragedy. It was a comedy. It was kind of boring.

This came as a huge surprise to me, but riding the bus is actually a pretty bleak experience without music. I mean, the other people don’t do anything but sit there and stare. They don’t stare at each other. Most of them don’t even stare out the window either. They just stare at nothing in particular, and every one of them has found a different spot of nothing to be staring at. This is almost as fun as it sounds. Try it sometime.

So, after spacing out gazing at the panel next to the emergency exit lever for a good 10 minutes, I snapped out of my existential funk and looked out the window for a bit.  If anyone cares, there are at least four food joints on Hastings that all make Vancouver’s best something or other.

Somewhere between the bus station and my house I realized that the iPod is not just a music player. (and no, I’m not talking about that parachute game) It’s also .. get this .. a mirror. Apparently someone at Apple, knows that good design goes hand in hand with good fun. I spent the rest of the ride home with my earphones in reflecting the setting sun’s rays onto unsuspecting victim’s shirts. Then, when they looked around to see why there was a small white dot doing loops around their belt buckle, I would just flip my nano back over to the non-mirrored side and appear to be listening to music.
